TRAGEDY IN NOLLYWOOD: Top SFX Artist James Akaie Dies in Set Explosion

The Nigerian film industry is in mourning following the tragic death of renowned special effects (SFX) and pyrotechnics artist, James Akaie.

Akaie lost his life on Friday, January 16, 2026, after sustaining fatal injuries during an explosion at a movie location in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The incident occurred just as the production was nearing its wrap.

The Incident: What Went Wrong?

According to a statement released by popular filmmaker and producer James Abinibi via the RockBottom Flix Instagram page, the blast occurred in a designated effects preparation area away from the main set.

  • Unauthorized Experiment: The explosion reportedly happened while Akaie was experimenting with an unauthorized pyrotechnic simulation involving a gas cylinder.
  • Other Casualties: Two of Akaie’s assistants were also caught in the blast. While they sustained significant fire burns, they are currently in stable condition and receiving treatment at a specialist hospital.
  • The Outcome: Akaie was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
