UNITY IN OSUN: Akin Ogunbiyi Dissolves Campaign Team to Back APC’s Oyebamiji for 2026

The political landscape in Osun State shifted on Saturday, January 17, 2026, as Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), officially collapsed his campaign structure into that of the party’s governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji.

Ogunbiyi, the Chairman of Mutual Benefits Assurance Plc, held an appreciation meeting in Osogbo with his “Idera De Movement” coordinators from all 30 local government areas. He directed them to cease all independent grouping and focus entirely on securing victory for the party in the August 8, 2026 governorship election.

Strategic Realignment for Osun West

Ogunbiyi’s decision is deeply rooted in the long-standing agitation for Osun West Senatorial District to produce the state governor.

  • The Candidate: Bola Oyebamiji, who emerged as the consensus candidate in the December 13, 2025 primary, hails from Osun West.
  • The Ambition: By stepping down his governorship vision, Ogunbiyi has signaled his intent to run for the Osun West Senatorial seat, provided Oyebamiji wins the governorship.
  • The Logic: “The emergence of Oyebamiji has addressed our district’s demands. My personal vision is now secondary to the party’s success,” Ogunbiyi stated.

Mobilizing the “Progressive Stronghold”

Ogunbiyi remains a heavyweight in the Iwo Federal Constituency, which boasts over 170,000 voters. He assured party leaders that his base is fully committed to the APC, promising a landslide victory in the three local governments within his constituency.

“Every one of us [the aspirants] resolved that we will work within our various constituencies to ensure that Bola Oyebamiji emerges as governor.” — Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi

The Road to August 8, 2026

With the primary season concluded and President Tinubu already offering his congratulations to Oyebamiji, the Osun APC is projecting a united front to reclaim the state from the incumbent PDP administration. The party is now focusing on reconciliation and grassroots mobilization, with Ogunbiyi’s “Idera De” structure expected to play a major role in the Osun West offensive.
