Blackout: Nigeria’s Power Grid Collapses for the Second Time in Five Days

ABUJA, NIGERIA — Nigeria has been plunged into another nationwide darkness following a total collapse of the national electricity grid on Tuesday morning, January 27, 2026. This marks the second time the system has failed in less than a week, following a similar incident last Friday.

Sudden Drop to Zero Megawatts

The collapse occurred at approximately 10:53 am, as confirmed by the Nigeria National Grid via its official X (formerly Twitter) account. Data obtained from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) revealed that power generation crashed from over 4,000MW to zero megawatts (0MW) instantly.

The outage has left millions of households and businesses without electricity, affecting all 11 Distribution Companies (DisCos) across the country:

  • Lagos & South West: Ikeja, Eko, Ibadan
  • North: Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, Jos, Yola
  • South & East: Benin, Enugu, Port Harcourt

Restoration Efforts Underway

In a brief follow-up statement, grid officials noted that “Restoration is in progress!” but provided no specific timeline for when power would return to all regions.

The previous collapse, which happened on Friday, January 23, was attributed by NISO to the simultaneous tripping of multiple 330kV transmission lines. While power was gradually restored over the weekend, this latest failure raises fresh concerns about the underlying stability of the nation’s energy infrastructure.

The Ongoing “Grid Fragility” Problem

This second collapse in January 2026 continues a troubling trend from late 2025, where the grid failed multiple times due to ageing equipment, gas supply shortages, and technical disturbances. For now, most major cities remain in total darkness as technical teams work to stabilize the interconnected network.
