KANO, NIGERIA — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that all arrangements are now in place for the upcoming by-elections in the Kano Municipal and Ungogo State Constituencies.

The elections are being held to fill vacancies in the Kano State House of Assembly following the unfortunate passing of the lawmakers who previously represented these districts.

Readiness and Political Participation

Addressing newsmen in Kano on Thursday, January 29, 2026, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Kano State, Amb. Abdullahi Zango, confirmed that the commission has reached the final stages of its technical and logistical preparations.

  • Party Interest: Over ten political parties have officially expressed interest in contesting the seats, signaling a high level of competitive spirit and democratic engagement.
  • Security & Logistics: Amb. Zango assured the public that INEC is working closely with security agencies to ensure a “hitch-free, credible, and transparent” exercise.

Call for Voter Turnout

The REC emphasized the importance of grassroots representation and urged the people of Kano Municipal and Ungogo to exercise their constitutional rights.

“We have put arrangements in top gear to guarantee a level-playing field for all contestants. I urge all eligible voters to turn out en masse on election day to choose their representatives without fear of intimidation,” Zango stated.

Restoring Equitable Representation

The primary goal of these by-elections is to restore the voices of these two major constituencies in the state legislature. By filling these seats, the Assembly aims to strengthen its legislative functions and ensure that the needs of the Ungogo and Kano Municipal people are effectively advocated for at the state level.
