In a strategic move to bolster their promotion ambitions, Rovers FC of Calabar officially unveiled Abdullahi Umar Tyabo as their new Technical Adviser on Wednesday, January 21, 2026.
Tyabo, a familiar face in Nigerian football coaching circles, arrives at the Cross River-based club following a brief and turbulent stint at Gombe United.
The Journey to Calabar
Tyabo’s appointment comes as Rovers FC looks for a steady hand to navigate the second half of the Nigeria National League (NNL) season.
- The Gombe Exit: Tyabo spent the first stanza of the 2025/2026 season with the “Savannah Scorpions.” However, he was suspended by the Gombe United management in December 2025 due to a perceived “poor performance” after the team managed only seven points from six matches.
- NPFL Pedigree: Beyond the NNL, Tyabo brings elite-level experience to Rovers, having previously served on the technical staff of Akwa United in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), where he held various roles between 2016 and 2024.
Current Standings & The Task Ahead
As of late January 2026, Rovers FC finds itself in a precarious position in NNL Group B, currently sitting in 9th place with just 7 points from 8 matches. Tyabo’s immediate mandate will be to pull the team away from the relegation zone and close the gap on group leaders Sporting Lagos.

A Fresh Start
The Rovers management, led by Chairman Maurice Inok, believes Tyabo’s tactical discipline and vision align with the club’s long-term philosophy. Fans are hopeful that his arrival will spark a “Zubairu-style” transformation—referencing the success of former Gombe coach Aliyu Zubairu—and restore the 1980s powerhouse to national relevance.
