RECAPITALIZATION CLOCK: 20 Banks Cross the Finish Line as CBN Sets Sights on “Productive Lending”

The race to fortify Nigeria’s financial sector is entering its final stretch. As of Thursday, January 15, 2026, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) confirmed that 20 commercial banks have now fully met the new minimum capital requirements, leaving just over two months until the March 31 deadline.

The update was provided by Dr. Muhammad Abdullahi, Deputy Governor for Economic Policy, during the 2026 Macroeconomic Outlook launch in Lagos.

The Current Standings

With 20 banks now compliant—up from 19 at the start of the year—the industry is showing strong momentum. However, approximately 13 banks are still in the process of finalizing their capital raises or submitting final reports to the apex bank.

Bank CategoryMinimum Capital RequirementKey Compliant Players (Confirmed/Early Movers)
International₦500 BillionAccess Bank, Zenith Bank, GTBank, First Bank, Fidelity Bank
National₦200 BillionWema Bank, Stanbic IBTC, PremiumTrust, Globus Bank, Providus-Unity
Merchant₦50 BillionFSDH, Greenwich, Nova, Rand Merchant Bank
Non-Interest₦10B – ₦20BJaiz Bank, Lotus Bank, TAJBank

Beyond the Balance Sheet: Why This Matters

Dr. Abdullahi emphasized that the CBN is looking past just “big numbers.” The goal is for this new capital to hit the “real economy.”

  • Targeted Credit: The CBN will monitor banks to ensure the ₦1 trillion economic goal is supported by loans to SMEs and local industries.
  • Financial Stability: A stronger capital base acts as a shock absorber against global economic volatility and inflation.
  • Merger Wave: For the remaining 13 banks, the pressure is mounting. Industry analysts expect a final wave of mergers and acquisitions for those unable to raise equity independently by March.

The Final Countdown

The CBN remains “very busy” as banks submit reports daily. For those yet to comply, the options are narrowing: raise the funds, find a merger partner, or face a license downgrade.
