ABUJA, Nigeria — In a monumental relief for Nigeria’s tertiary education system, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has finally reached a landmark agreement with the Federal Government! After years of negotiations, strikes, and disruptions, a new deal has been officially signed, promising stability and revitalization for universities.
Key Wins for Nigerian Academics & Education:
This new agreement addresses long-standing demands and introduces significant improvements, effective January 1, 2026:
- 40% Salary Increase: Academic staff across federal universities will see a substantial 40% increase in their salaries, a crucial step towards improving welfare and retaining top talent.
- Enhanced Retirement for Professors: A game-changer for senior academics: Professors will now retire with a pension equivalent to their full annual salary when they reach 70 years of age, ensuring dignity and financial security after decades of service.
- National Research Council: A dedicated National Research Council will be established, committing at least 1% of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to fund cutting-edge research. This is set to propel Nigerian universities into a new era of innovation and global competitiveness.
A New Era for University Education
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, hailed the agreement as a “new dawn” for Nigerian universities, emphasizing the government’s commitment to prioritizing education and academic excellence.
“This agreement marks a pivotal moment,” a visibly pleased ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, stated at the signing. “It’s a testament to sustained advocacy and a commitment from both sides to build a university system that truly serves the future of Nigeria.”
Students, parents, and the academic community are celebrating this resolution, hopeful that it ushers in an era of uninterrupted academic calendars and improved quality of learning.
