JUSTICE DELAYED: Nigerian Detained in Doha Cries Out Over Six-Week “Drug Stone” False Alarm

Qatar

A Nigerian passenger, Gideon Eze, has made a passionate appeal to the Federal Government for intervention following a six-week ordeal in Qatari detention that has shattered his life and career.1

Through his lawyer, human rights activist Inibehe Effiong, Eze revealed on Friday, January 23, 2026, that his nightmare began during a routine stopover in Doha on May 7, 2025, while traveling from Abuja to the United States.2

The Incident: “Benign Stones” Trigger Narcotic Alarm

The detention was sparked by a security check at Hamad International Airport where officials flagged items in Eze’s luggage as suspected narcotics.3

  • The “Drug” Claim: Qatari security claimed to have found illicit substances.4
  • Exhaustive Searches: Eze was subjected to chemical swabs, machine analysis, tongue-tasting, and a degrading strip search where he was forced to nakedly jump, squat, and cough.5
  • Negative Results: Despite every initial test returning negative for narcotics, Eze was handcuffed and moved to the Duhaill detention facility.6

“I was detained, my passport and phone seized, and my luggage forcibly removed from the aircraft. They sent the ‘stones’ for forensic lab analysis which took a staggering six weeks,” Eze recounted.

The Fallout: Revoked Visas and Academic Sabotage

Eze was finally released on June 19, 2025, with a case dismissal document from the Qatari Public Prosecution Department confirming no evidence of a crime.7 However, the damage was already done:

  1. US Visa Revocation: While in detention on May 12, 2025, the US Embassy revoked his visa based on the wrongful arrest.8
  2. Spousal Impact: Because Eze was a dependent on his wife’s student visa, her US visa was also revoked, disrupting her Ph.D. candidacy and academic career.9
  3. Missing Reports: While Qatar issued a dismissal letter, they have reportedly refused to release the specific forensic lab results Eze needs to appeal the US visa decision.10

Escalating Aviation Tensions

This case highlights a growing friction between Nigeria and Qatar Airways. In a related development in late 2025, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) fined the airline ₦5 million following a separate 18-hour detention of another Nigerian passenger over a disputed assault allegation.
