ANKARA, TÜRKİYE — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu arrived at the Ankara Esenboğa Airport at approximately 9:03 p.m. local time on Monday, January 26, 2026, beginning a landmark state visit aimed at solidifying Nigeria’s position as Türkiye’s lead partner in Africa.

The President was received by a high-ranking Turkish delegation led by the Minister of National Education, Yusuf Tekin, alongside the Nigerian Chargé d’Affaires, Ambassador Zayyad Abdulsalam.

Deepening Defense and Security Cooperation

A central pillar of this visit is the expansion of military ties. Defense Minister General Christopher Musa and Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar are leading technical sessions focused on:

  • Military Technology Transfer: Moving beyond simple purchases to localizing the production of Turkish defense hardware in Nigeria.
  • Counter-Terrorism: Sharing intelligence and advanced surveillance tactics to combat regional instability.
  • Technical Protocols: Signing new MoUs on military training and maritime security.

Economic Frontiers and Innovation

The visit is not limited to security. President Tinubu is scheduled to meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to oversee the signing of several pivotal Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in:

  • Energy & Research: Collaboration on renewable energy and scientific innovation.
  • Aviation: Improving direct flight routes and technical cooperation in aerospace.
  • Business Forum: A major Nigeria–Türkiye Business Forum will be held on the sidelines, connecting Nigerian investors with Turkish industrial giants.

A Reciprocal Milestone

This mission serves as a reciprocal visit following President Erdoğan’s trip to Nigeria in October 2021. With the 2026 agenda covering finance, communication, and infrastructure, the Tinubu administration aims to leverage Türkiye’s expertise in construction and manufacturing to drive the “Renewed Hope” agenda back home.
