ABUJA, Nigeria — In a stern response to the escalating wave of political instability across West Africa, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially declared a “Regional State of Emergency.”
The declaration, made by ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray during a high-level meeting in Abuja, underscores the bloc’s resolve to counter the proliferation of attempted coups and maintain democratic governance in the sub-region.
Benin Coup Foiled: Nigeria’s Rapid Response Lauded
A key catalyst for this emergency declaration was a recently foiled coup plot in the neighboring Benin Republic. ECOWAS leaders were quick to commend Nigeria for its swift and decisive action in helping to neutralize the threat.
“The audacious attempt to destabilize the Benin Republic was met with immediate, coordinated action, largely thanks to Nigeria’s rapid deployment and intelligence,” President Touray stated, praising Nigeria’s commitment to regional security.
President Tinubu Seeks Troops Deployment for Regional Stability
In a testament to Nigeria’s leadership, President Bola Tinubu is actively seeking the Nigerian Senate’s permission to deploy Nigerian troops. These forces would serve as a crucial component of a regional ECOWAS standby force, specifically tasked with maintaining stability and deterring further unconstitutional power grabs, particularly in Benin.
This move signals a robust commitment from ECOWAS, and particularly Nigeria, to actively defend democratic principles and prevent the region from backsliding into political turmoil. The focus is now on proactive intervention and strengthened regional security architecture.
