KANO, Nigeria — The commercial nerve center of Northern Nigeria is set for a digital rebirth. During a high-level stakeholders’ roundtable in Kano, NITDA Director-General Kashifu Inuwa announced a strategic intervention to provide Kannywood filmmakers with the high-tech infrastructure needed to compete on the global stage.
The “AI-First” Studio Strategy
The project goes beyond traditional filming; it is an incubation center for the next generation of creative technologists.
- Generative AI Integration: The studio will feature tools for AI-driven post-production, enabling faster editing and high-fidelity visual effects.
- International Expansion: At the request of the Professional Film Directors Association of Nigeria, NITDA will prioritize the development of AI-driven translation and subtitling software. This will allow Kannywood’s Hausa-language content to be seamlessly subtitled for global audiences in real-time.
- Modern Infrastructure: The facility will include advanced sound stages, digital editing suites, and incubation hubs for startups building media-tech solutions.
Pivoting the Economy
DG Kashifu Inuwa emphasized that filmmakers hold more power than political actors in shaping public perception. He urged producers to move from purely “profit-seeking” to creating content that inspires the next generation of Nigerian tech builders.
“Our goal is to pivot Northern Nigeria from ‘traditional commerce’ to an innovation-driven digital economy. We are bringing technology to the creators so they can build businesses that scale rapidly beyond local markets.”
Collaborative Innovation
The launch event also showcased homegrown innovations designed to support the ecosystem:
- PRev: A human-augmented media intelligence software for news monitoring.
- SchoolTra: An EdTech platform for managing student records.
Strategic Roadmap
The studio is part of NITDA’s 2026 Roadmap, which aims to solidify Nigeria’s position as Africa’s leader in AI applications. The partnership with Future Map Foundation—an organization committed to youth empowerment through tech—ensures that the studio will also serve as a training ground for thousands of young Nigerians in Kano, Jigawa, and across the North-West.
