ABUJA, Nigeria — As Nigeria navigates complex international waters, its relationship with China is deepening into a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” that promises significant benefits for both trade and national security. This evolving alliance was reaffirmed on December 10, 2025, when Chinese Ambassador Yu Dunhai met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Economic Lifeline: Zero-Tariff for Nigerian Exports!

In a move set to invigorate Nigeria’s economy, China has announced a groundbreaking zero-tariff policy for Nigerian exports! This means that a wide range of Nigerian goods can now enter the massive Chinese market without import duties, significantly reducing costs and making Nigerian products more competitive.

  • Balancing the Scales: This policy aims to help balance the trade deficit, ensuring that more revenue flows back into Nigeria from its non-oil exports.
  • Empowering Local Industries: It provides a golden opportunity for Nigerian manufacturers, agricultural producers, and artisans to tap into one of the world’s largest consumer bases.

Security Alliance: Counter-Terrorism Support

Beyond trade, China is also bolstering Nigeria’s fight against insecurity. As part of the renewed partnership, China is providing crucial military hardware and intelligence support for counter-terrorism operations. This assistance is vital as Nigeria continues its battle against various extremist groups, particularly in the North-East and North-West.

“Our relationship with China is founded on mutual respect and shared development goals,” stated a Presidency official. “This partnership addresses both our economic aspirations and our urgent security needs, providing vital support as we build a safer and more prosperous Nigeria.”

This “Fast Track” partnership with Beijing reflects Nigeria’s strategic foreign policy, diversifying its international relationships to secure robust support for its development and security agenda.
