Half-Price Travel: NRC Commences 50% Fare Slash for Christmas and New Year

Traveling home for the holidays just got significantly more affordable. Following a directive from the Federal Government, the NRC officially kicked off its festive discount service on Tuesday, December 23, 2025.

The initiative, which runs until Sunday, January 4, 2026, offers a 50% subsidy on all train tickets across the country’s major rail corridors.

Why the 50% Slash?

While the government offered “free rides” in previous years, the NRC Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, explained that a 50% discount was chosen this year to strike a balance between affordability and orderliness.

  • Curbing “Jolly Riders”: The subsidy ensures that seats go to those who genuinely need to travel, preventing overcrowding and “joyriding” that hindered regular commuters in the past.
  • Economic Relief: With airfares hitting ₦500,000 and road transport to Abuja exceeding ₦100,000, the rail discount provides a vital safety valve for families and students.

Routes and Early Success

Within hours of the announcement, railway stations recorded a massive surge in patronage. The discount applies to:

  • Standard Gauge: Lagos–Ibadan, Abuja–Kaduna, and Warri–Itakpe routes.
  • Narrow Gauge: All regional and mass transit services nationwide.

At major terminals like the Mobolaji Johnson Station in Lagos and the Idu Station in Abuja, trains have been departing at near-full capacity. Passengers have praised the move as a “Christmas miracle” that makes long-distance travel accessible despite the high cost of living.

How to Get Your Tickets

To ensure a smooth journey, the NRC has provided clear booking guidelines:

Identification: Ensure you have a valid ID (NIN or Driver’s License) for validation during boarding.

Standard Gauge (Lagos-Ibadan/Abuja-Kaduna): Passengers must use the official NRC online booking platform or the mobile app.

Narrow Gauge: Tickets are available for purchase directly at designated railway stations.
