WALL OF FES! Calvin Bassey Singles Out 3 Super Eagles ‘Architects’ Behind Mozambique Shutout

FES, Morocco — While the world is raving about Victor Osimhen’s clinical brace, Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey is shining a spotlight on the “engine room” of Nigeria’s defense.

Following the emphatic 4-0 demolition of Mozambique on Monday night, Bassey revealed that a specific trio was responsible for the tactical organization that secured Nigeria’s first clean sheet of the 2025 AFCON.

The “Organization Trio”

Bassey credited himself, fellow center-back Semi Ajayi, and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali for the disciplined structure that kept the Mambas at bay for 90 minutes.

“Semi, Stanley, and I did a good job of organizing everyone,” Bassey told reporters in Morocco. “Being central defenders, organizing the backline—it’s the little details, one step, clear communication—that make the difference.”

Learning from Group Stage Scares

The focus on defense wasn’t accidental. Nigeria entered the Round of 16 having conceded 4 goals in 3 group matches, often letting their guard down late in the game.

  • The 70-Minute Curse: Bassey noted that the team had developed a dangerous habit of conceding late. “We had conceded late in both previous games [against Uganda and Tunisia], around the 70th minute. So, everyone’s got to stay focused.”
  • The Result: Against Mozambique, that focus held firm. Nwabali was effectively “out of work” as the defensive unit ensured the Mambas didn’t register a single significant threat on goal.

A “Collective Effort”

Despite the praise for the backline, the Fulham star insisted that the 4-0 victory was a testament to the entire team’s work rate. “The attack starts from us at the back, and the defense starts from the boys in front,” he added. “They’ve been doing amazing, and we are just focusing on the small details to ensure we concede less as the tournament progresses.”

With the quarter-finals against Algeria looming, Bassey’s “Wall of Fes” will need to be at its strongest to stop the likes of Riyad Mahrez.
