ABUJA, NIGERIA — Professor Jideofor Adibe has stated that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) currently lacks a “credible alternative” in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections. However, he warned that the rapid influx of defectors into the party could eventually lead to an internal “implosion.”
The Momentum of Defections
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, Adibe noted that the recent defection of Governor Caleb Mutfwang from the PDP has created significant momentum for the APC.
“Right now, it is getting the momentum. There seems to be no credible alternatives to the APC. All the existing parties have one issue or the other.”
The Risk of APC “Implosion”
Despite the party’s growing dominance, Adibe suggested that the APC might be “suffering from its own success.” He explained that as more politicians join the ruling party to secure their futures, the party will inevitably face a surplus of ambitious leaders and a shortage of positions.
- Unsatisfied Ambitions: “So many people are moving into the party, not all of their aspirations and ambitions will be satisfied there.”
- Dissatisfaction: This creates a pool of “dissatisfied politicians” who may eventually seek another platform if a credible one emerges.
The “Credible Alternative” Vacuum
Adibe highlighted that for a real shift to occur, an opposition party (citing the ADC as a potential example) must resolve its internal crises to become a “recruiting ground” for these dissatisfied APC members.
- The Five-Seat Rule: He argued that even a small party gaining just five strategic seats could “dramatically” shift the momentum away from the APC if it presents itself as organized and viable.
Context: The Plateau Shift
Governor Mutfwang’s defection on Tuesday, January 27, follows a trend of political realignments. At a grand reception in Jos, Vice President Kashim Shettima welcomed the Governor, assuring him of “full standing” within the party and promising him the APC’s support for a second term in 2027. This move effectively solidifies the APC’s control over the North Central geopolitical zone.
