The ripples of Enzo Maresca’s New Year’s Day sacking are still being felt at Chelsea, and the biggest aftershock yet involves World Cup winner Enzo Fernández. Reports from France (L’Equipe) suggest the 24-year-old midfielder is “unsettled” and questioning the club’s direction under new boss Liam Rosenior.
The Maresca Connection
Fernández and Maresca shared a highly productive relationship, with Enzo flourishing as a key tactical cog and occasional captain. Under Maresca, Fernández helped secure two trophies in 2025:
- The UEFA Conference League
- The FIFA Club World Cup
The Argentine was reportedly “sad” to see the Italian depart after a breakdown in relations with the Chelsea board.
PSG on High Alert
While a January move is seen as difficult given his massive contract (running until 2031), Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have identified him as a priority long-term target. Luis Enrique is reportedly keen to add Fernández’s creativity and bite to a midfield currently revolving around Vitinha.
The Stumbling Blocks
- The Price Tag: Having signed for a then-British record of £107m in 2023, Chelsea would likely demand a similar nine-figure sum to let him go.
- Contract Length: With his deal running until 2032 (due to extensions), the Blues are under no financial pressure to sell this winter.
