ABUJA, Nigeria — The Labour Party has officially moved into a “post-Obi” era. In a communique issued by National Secretary Darlington Nwokocha, the party declared Governor Alex Otti its singular national figurehead, while formalizing the leadership of former Finance Minister Nenadi Usman as the National Chairman.
The Leadership Transition
The NWC’s decision to crown Alex Otti comes at a time when he is the only serving governor on the party’s platform. The party emphasized that this recognition is central to maintaining stability and a clear “strategic direction” for the future.
- National Leader: Governor Alex Chioma Otti
- National Chairman: Senator Nenadi Usman
- National Secretary: Senator Darlington Nwokocha
The Peter Obi Departure
In a notable diplomatic tone, the LP leadership addressed the departure of Peter Obi, who officially defected to the ADC in Enugu on December 31, 2025.
“The National leadership of the Labour Party wishes His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi success in his future political endeavors and in his new political affiliation.”
Obi’s move to the ADC is part of a broader “Rescue Mission” coalition that reportedly includes political heavyweights like Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, and Rauf Aregbesola, aiming to form a united front against the ruling APC in 2027.
The Legal Context: The “Abure” Factor
The LP underscored that its current leadership structure is backed by a Supreme Court judgment dated April 4, 2025. The apex court ruled that the tenure of former chairman Julius Abure had expired, effectively nullifying his hold on the party.
- INEC Compliance: The LP has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to fully recognize the Usman-led executive in all administrative and electoral matters.
- Ongoing Congresses: The party confirmed that its state and national congresses will proceed as planned, urging all “Obidients” and members to remain focused on the party’s mission of social justice.
